Wondercon 2011

WONDERCON 2011 Last weekend I flew all the way down to San Francisco from home-base Seattle for the large large comic guide/popular culture conference Wondercon. Though each massive and giant compared to some conventions I’ve attended, Wondercon is a little sister conference to the overwhelmingly mammoth San Diego Comiconâ€"however as is true with cities and cups of coffee, greater is not necessarily better. Wondercon was a blast, and although I hate flying, get lonely after I journey on my own (I’m so delicate), and I get actually miserly when it’s my very own cash on the line, I’m extremely pleased that I went. The exhibit corridor seen from above, with annoying reflections on the glass (sorry). My function in going to Wondercon was twofold, as I talked about in a previous post whereby I suggested all authors, aspiring and otherwise, to get to conventions and use them properly. Goal one was to do my seminar primarily based on The Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction: 6 Steps to Wr iting and Publishing Your Bestseller!: a one-hour Q&A on the eponymous topic. Though that was the very last thing I did on my trip to Wondercon, I might as properly report on that first, since for me it was the real spotlight. The first time I gave this talk was at Steamcon, a a lot smaller however big-in-spirit steampunk convention here in Seattle. There I had about ten folks present up. Saturday at Wondercon I spoke to about 150 individualsâ€"a unbelievable turnout that was immediately gratifying. Same as Steamcon I began out with a variation of my Five Things Every Author Should Know, which I tweak once in a while. This time I brought alongside a swell set of PowerPoint slides that showcased the total extent of my 1st Level PowerPoint skills. I took a picture of the audience at my seminar. I’m such a dork. We obtained a late begin, which is to be expected at even the best-run cons (and Wondercon was very well organized), particularly for the final occasion of the day, which min e wasâ€"in that room, anyway. I ran by way of my slides rapidly, sensing slightly impatience within the crowd. If you’ve learn my piece on convention etiquette for professionals, that counts as thinking on your ft. The real meat of the event is the Q&A. Once I obtained to that bit, lots of hands flew up and there was by no means a lull in the conversation. But all in all, a bit less than an hour really isn’t a lot time, so it’s hard to run some sort of writing master classâ€"examine that, impossible to run any sort of writing master class in that short span of time, but I assume we touched on some fascinating subjects and I stand by the recommendation I managed to convey. For authors, you really want to be able to do this type of factorâ€"speak in entrance of a crowd of 150 people who have chosen that room at that time as an alternative of all the opposite stuff occurring on the conference simply then. One of my five issues slides was: Be Prepared to Sell Yourself. When that s lide popped up, I advised the crowd, “I’m doing it proper now.” And I was, but a slide with an image of my e-book’s cowl and a last slide with my Twitter address, the URL for this blog, and the name of the sales space down in the exhibit hall that agreed to sell a few copies of the e-book on consignment, was just about the extent of the plugging. I hope it didn’t come throughout as an infomercial. That was undoubtedly not the intent. I actually wanted to convey to people who find themselves writing, who're thinking about writing, who're battling writing, that there are expertise you can be taught that can make you a better writer, and that the publishing business isn't a closed store. There are ways to “get in,” and the very first thing everyone has to begin with is an unique, properly-written, full manuscript. Thanks go out to Matt at Matt’s Cavalcade of Comics, who sold my e-book at Wondercon. How did I set that up, authors with books to promote at conventions may ask? I went by way of the listing of exhibitors on the Wondercon web site and Googled everybody who seemed like a wide range of bookseller. Again, Wondercon is a much bigger than average conference, so I ended up with a list of 21 prospects. I ended up sending out seven emails, and Matt obtained again to me. I dragged the copies with me in my suitcase, found him Friday right after the corridor opened, and there we've it. It was just that easy. He has a couple copies left after Wondercon ended and he’s bringing them to a different convention. It’s all good. So then what in regards to the different of the 2 things I went there to do: Get work writing comic books. When I was with TSR and Wizards of the Coast I never introduced a contract with me to Gen Con, although each time I went to that convention, and others, I talked to quite a few would-be authors. I’m unsure that any of those conversations led on to someone writing a e-book for me, however perhaps in a roundabout means th ey did. Editors want greater than a dialog at a conferenceâ€"especially at a conference as massive as Wondercon the place you'll be able to have lots of these conversations and it’s simple to lose monitor of who was who by the point you get residenceâ€"to rent you. So I went in with very sensible expectations, which is to say I did not come house with a signed contract, and was not in the slightest bit stunned or disappointed. I did, nonetheless, attend a seminar at 2:30 on Friday referred to as Breaking into Comics the Marvel Way, which was fantastic. This was precisely how a panel like this could go. It was encouraging, however realistic, welcoming however cautionary. Well carried out, C.B. Cebulski and co-panelists Joe Quesada, Jeph Loeb, Axel Alonso, and Jason Aaron. The Marvel guys advised us all precisely what to do to make that first contact with them, and I’m going to follow their instructions to the letter. This is precisely the recommendation I gave at my own seminar: If a publisher or agent has anything like submission tips, read them, perceive them, and comply with them to the letter. Help publishers discover you, help them such as you, assist them need to work with you. Now, everybody concentrate actually exhausting on sending me optimistic comedian guide writing vibrations. A little magical considering on the facet by no means damage anybody. Other excessive points? Well, I actually only had that one hour of “work” to do at Wondercon, but was there all day Friday and Saturday, so I got an opportunity to simply attend the convention and be amongst my tribe. In no particular order: I went to the presentation on the brand new Green Lantern film featuring the star of the movie, Ryan Reynolds. He was funny and charming, they usually confirmed about 10 minutes of the movie and it appears really cool. Kinda Green Lantern-meets-Tron, but, y’know, in a great way. I might be there with IMAX 3D bells on. Jon Favreau (proper) and producer Roberto O rci answer fan questions. The different film star I went to see was Jon Favreau. I’ve been a giant Favreau fan since I first saw Swingers, which I nonetheless suppose is the single best movie about males ever made. Iron Man was good, too. He was also funny and charming, and I obtained a seat closer up, which was cool. He showed some footage from Cowboys and Aliens that looked promising. This won't be a bad summer season for movies. Hollywood owes us one after last yr, in spite of everything. I trolled my method through the large exhibit hall and was glad I spent a lot of time there on Friday. On Saturday the crowds seemed to multiply by ten and it was inconceivable to move in spots. I discovered a man with a bunch of packing containers of comic books for $2.00 each. I ran across a duplicate of Fantastic Four #200 there, purchased it, then wandered previous a sales spaceâ€"I assume it was for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and there was comic legend Marv Wolfman, who, it so occu rs, wrote Fantastic Four #200. I handed him the copy I’d simply bought and he signed it for me and we chatted for a minute. Really a nice man. People who know me at all know that I’m a big Survivor geek and I follow a number of other actuality shows as nicely. Though it doesn’t hold quite the place in my coronary heart as Survivor my spouse and I watch The Amazing Race. I wandered via the movie star, artists, and small-press tables and there was Kynt and Vyxsin, the “goth couple” from The Amazing Race. I paid then $10 for an autographed picture for my wife they usually were fantasticâ€"actually friendly, open, and appreciative of the crowd of fans. They have been both simply nice, taking photos with fans and not being overly commercial. Some of the “celebrities” there were a little post-D listing, and a few of them just appeared depressedâ€"straight out of The Wrestler. But Kynt and Vyxsin haven’t been beaten down by that finish of the business yet, fortunately, and for their sakes I hope they don’t. Lou Ferrigno presses the flesh with followers. I got a blurry photograph of Lou Ferrigno, who seemed great, however I couldn’t justify the $forty he needed for an autographed photo. No offense, Lou. You know I love you, man. Speaking of people who find themselves accessible and fun at a conference, DC Comics’ Don DiDio is a madman. His real enthusiasm really shined through, regardless of a conference-damaged voice that was painful to listen to. I love it when these guys really seem to get how cool their jobs are. If you’re a author, want to be a author, or are just a fan of style fiction, comedian books, movies, or pop culture in general, you simply should get to conventions. You have to. This one price me lower than $a thousand all in to attendâ€"I didn’t have to pay admission, being each a “skilled” and a panelist, however there was airfare and hotel to deal with, meals, and so on. And I bought t-shirts and stuff for the children . . . I could have spent $10,000 in that dealers room, however I didn’t. If you can find a convention within driving distance, you’ll save the airfare. If you live in or close to something like a metropolis, there’s got to be a neighborhood convention that gained’t even cost you a resort room. Go, folks. Go! â€"Philip Athans About Philip Athans I get pleasure from your writing very much thanks for posting this. You have an exquisite weblog. Writing is a hobby I really take pleasure in. It’s very enjoyable and puts your thoughts comfy for that single moment in time. A Day on the Park â€" A Creative Story I was one of the many standing on the sides of the room through the Q&A. I agree that one hour was not sufficient to cowl the topic, but a lot of the questions opened up plenty of information on what it takes to turn into seen/published. I just needed to say thanks for holding the Q&A, I took so much away from it that I will be sure to observe. Also, I felt like SciFi and Fantasy writers should have been better represented out there on the primary floor. There have been a lot of online comics and artists in the principle corridor, however I was pretty disenchanted by the shortage of authors. Here is a new type of meditation that will help reduce anxiety

Here is another kind of contemplation that will help decrease tension Here is another kind of reflection that will help lessen uneasiness Initially an apparatus for our precursors' endurance, uneasiness isn't as convenient as it used to be, what with the lack of savage creatures occupying a similar space as us. As an uneasiness victim of just about 17 years, I can scarcely review when I wasn't apprehensive or frightened of something. I created it at five years old. Yet, when I was that youthful, I didn't comprehend what it was.It wasn't until I took a brain research class in secondary school that I got interested with psychological well-being. I understood I had anxiety, depression, and a clothing rundown of different issues. Be that as it may, throughout the most recent year or somewhere in the vicinity, I've invested a great deal of my energy investigating and rehearsing approaches to all the more likely adapt to and even suppress these illnesses.Compared to every single other mean of getting my uneasiness to relax, reflection has been the best and helpful to my general prosperity. At the point when we see reflection , we in some cases picture a priest in lotus present roosted on a stone on a mountain. While that would be considered contemplating, that is not by any means the only approach. Pondering, at its center, is a demonstration of calming the brain. It very well may be on a mountain or in your living room.Classic MeditationThe best part about what I call great reflection is you needn't bother with anything separated from yourself to make it work. It's just a matter of finding a peaceful spot, sitting down, and shutting your eyes.Once you've discovered an attractive area and your eyes are closed, attempt to focus consideration on your breath. Taking full breaths is key here. I like to include to three in the middle of each breathe in and exhale.Try to concentrate on just a single thing. You may see this is a lot actually quite difficult, however. This is on the grounds that our cerebrums are accustomed to zooming between musings without a second's notification. At the point when you work o n ruminating, great or else, it shows you how to loosen up contemplations and train consideration on a solitary thing. If sitting peacefully isn't some tea, however, don't worry. Permit me to acquaint with you what I call diverted meditation.Distracted MeditationDistracted contemplation seems like a confusing expression, yet permit me to clarify. I call it diverted in light of the fact that you don't need to be in a tranquil spot with your eyes closed.Meditation doesn't need to be sitting peacefully. Indeed, about anything can be viewed as reflection under the privilege circumstances. As a model, I will allude to my preferred type of diverted contemplation: music. Regardless of whether I'm tuning in to it, playing it, or recording it, music never neglects to cause me to disregard the time passing by. I'll begin composing a melody, and before I know it, two hours have passed by. This is the way to diverted meditation.Staying occupied can help with regards to having uneasiness. Then aga in, occupied reflection includes complete drenching in whatever you're doing. It very well may be gaming, perusing a book, going for a nature stroll - anything. You will likely shut out everything aside from the one errand you're working on.Making Your ChoiceIf more individuals knew about diverted reflection, they may be progressively disposed to try it out. In any case, a large portion of us practice it whether we understand it or not. It is anything but a way to consummation your nervousness, yet it can reduce it. Having a more clear brain is much better than having one blocked with dread and nervousness.I examine contemplation, among different techniques for managing tension in my free digital book, Uneasiness Friends. This article was initially distributed on Talkspace.com.
